If history is your bag, then buckle your seatbelt because the Grimes and Waller Counties are jam packed with historical sites!
Anderson, the county seat of Grimes County, is the home of the Fanthorp Inn. The Inn was an overnight stagecoach stop on the old road from Nacogdoches to San Antonio in the 1800’s. The Fanthorp Inn is open for public tours on Saturday and Sunday. The second Saturday of each month is Stagecoach Days, which includes rides on an authentic replica of an 1850 Concord stagecoach around the town square.
Liendo Plantation, a 67,000 acre plantation, is located just outside Hempstead. The plantation home was spared by General George Armstrong Custer at the end of the Civil War. Gen. Custer was instructed to burn the home down, but refused because its residents had nursed his beloved wife back to health after she contracted yellow fever. Civil War Weekend, including a battle re-enactment, is held every year the weekend before Thanksgiving. Click here for schedule and ticket information.
